This year's Minnesota Governor's Commendation award for GIS was presented at the GIS/LIS Conference in St. Cloud, Minnesota, October 4, 2005 to:
MapServer: MapServer is an
open-source development system for building web-based mapping applications
and services. It was developed locally and now some 20 developers from
around the world are contributing to the source code. MapServer has
revolutionized the world of web-mapping by making commercial quality,
high-performance software available at no cost. Presently more than 1,500
copies are being downloaded a month. This past June, its third annual user
group meeting drew more than 300 people to Minneapolis; next year’s
conference will be held in Switzerland. Users range from non-profits, to
government organizations, to universities, to commercial businesses.
