| Abstract | Arc/INFO coverages (as export files) and ArcView shapefiles depicting a variety of characteristics of the ground-water system of Rice County, Minnesota. | |||
| Purpose | Geographic information systems (GIS) layers were created to cartographically depict and spatially analyze data used in the production of the Rice County Geologic Atlas, Part B. A County Geologic Atlas (CGA) is a systematic study of a county's geologic and ground-water resources. Geologic studies include both near-surface deposits and bedrock. Ground-water studies include flow systems, aquifer capacity, ground-water chemistry, and sand and gravel deposits. Interpretation of sensitivity to pollution is also part of a CGA. The information is organized, analyzed, and displayed using GIS technology. |

| Lineage | Review of available data: Investigations begin with a review of existing information, such as earlier geologic maps, soil maps, hydrologic reports, and information provided by well drillers. Drillers send water well logs to the Minnesota Geological Survey, where they are reviewed, interpreted, and entered into the County Well Index (CWI), an interactive data base of water-well information. Collection of data from the field: Field studies are conducted to measure static water level elevations and chemistry of selected wells. These studies, combined with pre-existing data, are used to create models of water-table and bedrock hydrogeology (elevation, potentiometric surface, potential yield, flow direction), and sensitivity of ground water system to pollution. Creation of GIS layers: Using a variety of techniques, data is converted into Arc/INFO coverages or ARCVIEW shapefiles for cartographic display and spatial analysis. |

| Entity and Attribute Overview | The Rice County Geologic Atlas, Part B consists of 20 separate GIS data layers divided into three plates: Plate 7 - Hydrogeology of the Water Table Plate 8 - Hydrogeology of Bedrock and Buried Aquifers Plate 9 - Sensitivity of Ground-Water System to Pollution. Both Arc/INFO coverages (as export files), and ARCVIEW shapefiles are available. COVERAGES USED IN MORE THAN ONE PLATE: 1. Wells sampled by DNR staff for chemistry COVERAGES USED IN PLATE 7: Hydrogeology of the Water-Table 1. Buried sand and gravel deposits 2. County Well Index (CWI) wells that draw from the bedrock unconfined aquifer system 3. Flow direction of the water table 4. Perched condition. 5. Water table elevation contours COVERAGES USED IN PLATE 8: Hydrogeology of Bedrock Aquifers 1. Line separating confined from unconfined condition. 2. Cross section lines 3. CWI wells that draw from bedrock confined aquifer system 4. Flow direction of bedrock aquifer system 5. Potentiometric surface of the St. Lawrence -Franconia aquifer system. 6. Potentiometric surface of the St. Peter - Prairie du Chien - Jordan aquifer system 7. Thickness of the St. Lawrence - Franconia aquifer system 8. Thickness of the St. Peter - Prairie du Chien - Jordan aquifer system 9. Unconfined condition. COVERAGES USED IN PLATE 9: Pollution Sensitivity 1. Sensitivity of the water table to pollution 2. Sensitivity of bedrock and confined aquifers to pollution 3. Alluvium deposits used in the depiction of recharge conditions. 4. Flow direction of ground-water recharge 5.
