Originator Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Waters Division, County Atlas and Regional Assessment Program
Title Crow Wing County Geologic Atlas, Part B
Abstract ArcGIS shapefiles depicting a variety of characteristics of the ground water system of Crow Wing County, Minnesota.
Purpose Geographic information systems (GIS) layers were created to cartographically depict and spatially analyze data used in the production of the Crow Wing County Geologic Atlas, Part B.

A County Geologic Atlas (CGA) is a systematic study of a county's geologic and ground-water resources. Geologic studies include both near-surface deposits and bedrock. Ground-water studies include flow systems, aquifer capacity, ground-water chemistry, and sand and gravel deposits. Interpretation of sensitivity to pollution is also part of a CGA.

Lineage Review of available data:
Investigations begin with a review of existing information, such as earlier geologic maps, soil maps, hydrologic reports, and information provided by well drillers. Minnesota Geological Survey staff review and interpret drillers' logs and enter the data into the County Well Index (CWI), an interactive data base of water-well information.

Collection of data from the field:
Field studies are conducted to measure static water level elevations and chemistry of selected wells. These studies, combined with pre-existing data, are used to create models of water-table and bedrock hydrogeology (elevation, potentiometric surface, potential yield, flow direction), and sensitivity of ground water system to pollution.

Creation of GIS layers:
Using a variety of techniques, data is converted into ArcGIS shapefiles, grids, or feature classes for cartographic display and spatial analysis. Metadata for individual layers contain more detailed lineage information.

Entity and Attribute Overview The Crow Wing County Geologic Atlas, Part B consists of 11 separate GIS data layers divided into four plates:

Plate 7 - Hydrogeology of the Buried and Surficial Aquifers
Plate 8 - Hydrogeologic Cross Sections
Plate 9 - Pollution Sensitivity of the Buried and Surficial Aquifers
Plate 10 - Interaction of Lakes and Ground Water

Layers used in more than one plate:
- chempt - Wells sampled by DNR staff for chemistry
- indexpt - Well data used by DNR staff to construct aquifer and related maps

Layers used in Plate 7, Hydrogeology of the Buried and Surficial Aquifers:

sdthpy - Modeled surficial sand and gravel thickness
gwelln - Modeled water table elevation contours
gwdppy - Modeled water table depth
potsfcln - Potentiometric contour elevations

Layers used in Plate 8, Hydrogeologic Cross Sections:

aqelpy - Modeled elevations of the top of the buried aquifers

Layers used in Plate 9, Sensitivity to Pollution of the Buried and Surficial Aquifers

aqbdsnpy - Sensitivity to pollution of the buried aquifers
aqsfsnpy - Sensitivity to pollution of the surficial sand and gravel aquifers

Layers used in Plate 10, Interaction of Lakes and Ground Water

stisopt - stable isotope chemistry samples
geolkpy - geologic settings of lakes

Layers are available as ArcGIS shapefiles. Layer-specific metadata is available with the data download and describes the data fields in the layer.
