| Title | Carlton County Geologic Atlas - Part B | |||
| Abstract | ArcGIS shapefiles depicting a variety of characteristics of the ground water system of Carlton County, Minnesota. | |||
| Purpose | Geographic information systems (GIS) layers were created to cartographically depict and spatially analyze data used in the production of the Carlton County Geologic Atlas, Part B. A County Geologic Atlas (CGA) is a systematic study of a county's geologic and groundwater resources. Geologic studies include both glacial deposits and bedrock units. Groundwater studies include the distribution of surficial and buried sand aquifers, hydrogeology of the surficial and buried aquifers, and sensitivity to pollution of the buried aquifers and the near-surface materials. |

| Lineage | Review of available data: Investigations begin with a review of existing information, such as earlier geologic maps, soil maps, hydrologic reports, and information provided by well drillers. Minnesota Geological Survey staff review and interpret driller's logs, and enter the data into the County Well Index (CWI), an interactive data base of water-well information. Collection of data from the field: Field studies are conducted to measure static water level elevations in wells and chemistry of selected wells. These studies, combined with pre-existing data, are used to create models of water-table and bedrock hydrogeology (elevation, potentiometric surface, capacity, flow direction), and sensitivity of groundwater system to pollution. Creation of GIS layers: Using a variety of techniques, data are converted into ArcGIS shapefiles, grids, or feature classes for cartographic display and spatial analysis. Metadata for individual layers contain more detailed lineage information. |

| Entity and Attribute Overview | The Carlton County Geologic Atlas, Part B consists of 9 separate GIS data layers divided into four plates: Plate 7 - Hydrogeology of the Surficial Aquifer Plate 8 - Hydrogeologic Cross Sections Plate 9 - Hydrogeology of the Buried Aquifers Plate 10 - Sensitivity of Groundwater Systems to Pollution Shapefiles used in each plate include the following: Shapefiles used in more than one plate: chempt - Wells sampled by DNR staff for chemistry. Also includes historical data from wells sampled by MPCA staff. indexpt - Well data used by DNR staff to construct aquifer and related maps Shapefiles used in Plate 7, Hydrogeology of the Surficial Aquifer sdthpy - Modeled surficial sand aquifer thickness gwelpy - Modeled water table elevation gwdppy - Modeled depth to water table Shapefiles used in Plate 9 , Hydrogeology of the Buried Aquifers aqbdelpy - Modeled elevation of the top of the buries aquifers potsfcln -Modeled potentiometric contour elevations of the buried aquifers Shapefiles used in Plate 10, Pollution Sensitivity of the Buried Sand Aquifers and the Near-Surface Materials aqbdsnpy - Sensitivity to pollution of the buried aquifers nrsfsnpy - Sensitivity to pollution of the near-surface materials |
