McLeod County Geologic Atlas - Part A

Metadata created using Minnesota Geographic Metadata Guidelines

Metadata Summary

Originator Minnesota Geological Survey
Abstract A County Geologic Atlas is a systematic study of a county's geologic and ground water resources. Geologic studies include both near-surface deposits and bedrock. Ground water studies include flow systems, aquifer capacity, and ground water chemistry. In some areas sand and gravel deposits, sinkholes, or other features are studied. Interpretation of sensitivity to pollution is also part of an atlas. The information is organized, analyzed, and displayed using geographic information technology.

Most Geologic Atlas and Regional Hydrogeologic Assessment projects are done in two parts. The Minnesota Geological Survey covers basic geology and creates databases of information such as wells and soil borings in part A. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources handles hydrogeology and ground water sensitivity layers in Part B. Completion of a project's two parts is staggered: Part A is completed about two years before Part B, compiling information used to create part B. Parts A and B are published and distributed as two separate products.

The export (.e00) files for the Arc/Info coverages created for this
project are in the folder export(e00).

If you would prefer to have the digital data on DVD, contact our Map
Sales Department at (612) 627-4780, ext. 238.

Metadata for the GIS files is provided in the metadata folder as Microsoft Word documents or xml files.

The published paper maps included in the geologic atlas can be viewed as pdf versions of the plates (see directory c-20_pdfs):
p1_db.pdf = data-base map
p2_bg.pdf = bedrock geology map
p3_bg2.pdf = supplement to the bedrock geology
p4_sg.pdf = Quaternary (surficial) geology map
p5_qstrat.pdf = cross sections, sand distribution model maps
p6_dt_bt.pdf = bedrock topography, depth to bedrock andmineral endowment map

C20.zip--[220Mb] Arcmap 9.3 mxd and shapefiles and Arc Grids, illustrating the geology of Mcleod County. The c20mcleodcga.mxd will not run under older versions of Arcmap, but the shapefiles can be loaded into any other version. The orthophoto raster image of Mcleod county is not included with the C-20.zip due to size limitations. It can be obtained from the DNR data deli.

Also included in the C-20.zip is a c20mcleodcga.pmf file.
This file is for the ESRI program ArcReader which can be downloaded freely from the esri.com web site. This will allow anyone to view the project data and maps, the main limitation is that independent data cannot be added to the ArcReader project. An ArcScene project, Mcleod3d.sxd is also included for those with an ArcScene license.

The pdf maps should be viewed using Acrobat Reader 5.0 or higher for best results. If necessary, download the files in binary, not ASCII.

If you would like paper copies of the geologic plates; contact the MGS Map Sales office at 612-627-4780, ex. 238 and specify publication County Atlas Series C-20, part A, or County geologic atlas of Mcleod County.

Purpose County Geologic Atlas and Regional Hydrogeologic Assessment information is used in planning and environmental protection efforts at all levels of government. Wellhead protection and well-sealing programs are examples of local programs that need geologic and ground water information. The information is also used by businesses and the general public.

Logical Consistency See individual layer metadata files on ftp site.
Completeness See individual layer metadata files on ftp site.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy See individual layer metadata files on ftp site.
Lineage Investigations begin with a review of existing information, such as earlier geologic maps, soil maps, and hydrologic reports. Drillers send water well logs to the Minnesota Geological Survey, where they are reviewed, interpreted, and entered into the County Well Index (CWI), an interactive data base of water-well information. Building on the previous data, field studies are conducted to improve the understanding of local geologic and hydrologic conditions. Linework is created based upon the field studies and base data, and digitized. Background GIS data layers such as roads, surface hydrography, township grids, etc., are obtained from various sources, as noted in the Entity/Attribute section.
