Metadata created using Minnesota Geographic Metadata Guidelines
| Originator | United States Forest Service, Chippewa National Forest |
| Abstract | This Chippewa National Forest data set is an Arc/Info polygon coverage and associated databases for Forest Service lands within the Forest boundary. This data set graphically displays and describes any natural or artificially created vegetation which exhibits enough homogeneity to make it distinguishable from surrounding areas. Stands are both forested and non-forested. The data was developed for forest planning and project analysis. The data was manuscripted at 1:24000 using orthophotography base, resource photography, and district compartment maps. |

| Access Constraints | The data set is available free of charge in Arc/Info export format on a requester provided writeable CD-ROM or 8mm tape. Any processing or conversion to another format would require a charge for that service. |
| Use Constraints | The Forest Service uses the most current and complete data available. Using GIS data for purposes other than those for which they were created, may yield inaccurate or misleading results. | Attribute Accuracy | All stand attributes were interpreted from aerial photography. Prior to the late 1980's 10% of all stands were visited and examined every year as part of an inventory and update program. Since that time, the annualized inventory program has evolved to a program where stands are visited and examined on an as needed basis. Therefore attribute accuracy varies from stand to stand. | |||
| Logical Consistency | The data set is topologically 'clean' | |||
| Completeness | Vegetative stands have been mapped for all Forest Service ownership in the Chippewa National Forest. | |||
| Horizontal Positional Accuracy | The data set is considered to meet National Mapping Accuracy Standards at 1:24000 (within 40 feet of actual location). | |||
| Vertical Positional Accuracy | Not applicable | |||
| Lineage | DATA SOURCES: 1:24000 orthophotography - 1981 &1989 1:24000 Cartographic Feature Files (landlines, lakes, streams, roads for vertical integration) 1:15840 resource photography 1:15840 compartment maps PROCESSING STEPS FOR THE STANDS LAYER: The 1981 and 1989, 1:24000, quad-based orthophotography was used as the base for this project. Stand boundaries were manuscripted on mylar overlays. Changes since the orthophotography were identified from current resource photography and district compartment maps. Finally, district reviews of the manuscripts were made. Stand polygons were labeled with district, compartment, and stand numbers. The mylar manuscripts were automated using several methods and parties. Methods for automation included scanning and digitizing in several software packages. Registration was to 1:24000 Primary Base Map quad corners. Files were all converted to Arc/Info coverages for all 68 quads (tiles) that contain or partially contain Forest Service ownership. Existing landnet, roads, lakes and streams layers were used where they coincided with stand boundaries. Coverages were reviewed and edited by district personnel. |
