| Abstract | The 1998 Forest Inventory data set is an ARC/INFO polygon coverage that encompasses the County Memorial Forest Land and Tax Forfeited Trust Lands of Clearwater County, Minnesota. The data set was developed by the Clearwater County Land and Forestry Department with assistance from private consultants: Pro-West and Associates, Walker, Minnesota; and the Land Management Information Center (LMIC), St. Paul, Minnesota. The data was interpreted from aerial photography (1:15,840 B&W IR) and field surveys of forest stands. |

| Attribute Accuracy | Forest stands inventoried are interpreted from aerial photography and field surveys following the specifications of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Phase II Inventory Methods Manual. Accuracy limitations have not been established, however, boundaries of forest stands are inventoried respectively with ground features and reference points. The data set is accurate relative to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Topographic Maps. | |||
| Logical Consistency | The data set is topologically 'clean', however, a complete stand by stand quality control check is in the process. | |||
| Completeness | The data set is complete. New additions and deletions of County Lands can occur and are updated annually. | |||
| Horizontal Positional Accuracy | The data set is considered to meet the National Mapping Accuracy Standards at 1:24,000 (within approximately 50 feet of actual location). | |||
| Vertical Positional Accuracy | Not applicable | |||
| Lineage | PROCESSING STEPS FOR THE ANNUAL UPDATING OF THE DATA SET: Timber sales for specific forest stands are established by utilizing the most recent plotted forest coverage maps to determine the aerial extent and surrounding covertypes of forest stands. Aerial photography is also utilized to establish reference marks in field. Field work is conducted to prepare the stand for harvesting including determining acreage and other necessary forestry items. After the forest stand has been harvested the forest stand is field checked again. This is required to determine the actual harvested area of the stand, and its boundaries in relation to reference mark, including forest trails, water bodies, and other forest stands. The boundary of the harvested forest stand is completed in office by Department staff from aerial photography and transferred onto mylar. The mylar is then overlaid onto GIS produced base map templates for sections containing forest stands. In some situations, new forest stands (polygons) are mapped, or merged with adjacent forest stands. These new forest stands (polygons) are provided to the GIS staff in the Department to be digitized into the respective township forest coverages. The data is digitized on a 4 inches = 1 mile template. Once digitized the coverage is topologically cleaned, edited and updated. Upon completion of all forest stand updates in every township, the coverages are mapjoined producing a data set of forest stands countywide. |

| Entity and Attribute Overview | Data are referenced to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources CSA Tatum Guide. The original categories used for the DNR Phase II Inventory were established in 1988 and have been modified only slightly over the years of generating Clearwater County forest inventory maps. The classes (attributes) for the data set are intended only for county staff use and interpretation. Listed below are the attributes of the forest coverage: OWNER: Broad ownership category SECTION: Standard PLS section TYPE: Unique stand sequence number within each owner and PLS section TOWNSHIP: PLS Township RANGE: PLS Range E_W: Differentiates between east and west ranges of the 4th Principle Meridian COUNTY: Unique county codes RAD: MN DNR Division of Forestry Area code FOREST: State Forest code OTHER: Code for any management unit other than state forest COMP: Compartment number ACQUI: Acquisition status of the land parcel ADMIN: Administrator for the land parcel CTYPE: Forest cover type classification code CSIZE: Size class based on dbh of trees CDENSE: Density class UTYPE: Understory cover type USIZE: Same as csize UDENSE: Same as cdense ACRES: Acreage of the stand YEAR: The last 2 digits of the year in which the survey was done TOPO: Topographic characteristics of the site SI: Site index obtained using tree age and height PHYS: Physiographic class (soil moisture) AGE: Average stand age in years AT THE TIME OF SURVEY BA: Basal area per acre CORDS: The volume/acre in cords for all trees 5-15 inches dbh MBF: Thousands of board feet/acre for trees 15+ inches dbh COND: Condition class TBR: Timber status, defines any restrictions on harvesting SPP: Specie code of the main specie in the stand DBH: Diameter at breast height of main specie HEIGHT: Height (feet) of main specie VOLUME: Volume per acre DAMAGE: Damage code AFFECT: Percentage affected by damage MORTAL: Percentage of mortality in stand SHRUBS: Shrub specie code DISTR: Distribution pattern of shrub DENSE: Density of shrubs BROWSE: Amount of shrub available to deer COVER: Ground cover code RECON: Reconnaissance level ORIGIN: Stand origin ROAD: Distance to road in miles SIGN: Significant feature(s) present in the stand CARDS: Obsolete, used mainly as a flag for various unique applications The remaining fields in this table are mostly repeating items of information collected for up to 8 co-dominant or sub-dominant tree species that make up the stand composition. This includes more information on species make-up of the stand understory. The first set of these attributes are listed below (field names beginning with the string 'S2'). Subsequent sets (field names beginning with S3-S5) contain the same attributes and are not described here. The 2nd specie through 5th specie are of commercial size class, 5 inches dbh or greater. S2SPP: Same specie codes as for SPP above S2DBH: Diameter at breast height in inches S2DST: Distribution of specie in the stand S2VOL: Volume per acre S2DAM: Damage codes S2HAR: Harvest recommendation MISC_CORD MISC_BF The next set of attributes are listed below (field names beginning with the string 'S6'). Subsequent sets (field names beginning with S7-S9) contain the same attributes and are not described here. The 6th specie through 9th specie are less than 5 inches dbh. S6SPP: Same as all other specie codes S6SIZ: 1 = 0-0.9 inch; 2 = 1-2.9 inches; 3 = 3-4.9 inches S6DEN: Same as understory density class S6DST: Same as other distribution codes S6DAM: Same as other damage codes REMS: Remarks, comments CURAGE VER_DATE |
