Metadata Summary

Originator Land Management Information Center, Minnesota Planning and Minnesota Geological Survey
Abstract This dataset describes the depth to bedrock (based on 100-foot contour intervals) and the areas of significant bedrock outcrops in Minnesota, as delineated by the Minnesota Geological Survey. It is an automated version of the Minnesota Geological Survey State Map Series Map S-14 (Geologic Map of Minnesota: Depth to Bedrock), 1982, by B.M. Olsen and J.H. Mossler. (1:1,000,000).

The file is a modification of the published map. The file was modified by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to create closed polygons where none existed on the base map. This occurred primarily in the northwestern portion of the state, where few data points existed to draw contour lines, but where the depth to bedrock is generally high. This was done in order to enable the creation of a polygon digital coverage.

The Arc/Info version of the dataset has been broken into two layers: depth to bedrock (DPTHBDRK) and outcrops (OUTCROP). The EPPL grid version exists as one file (DEPTHCROP.EPP)

Distributor Organization Land Management Information Center, Minnesota Planning
Ordering Instructions This data set is distributed on the internet by clicking below after Online Linkage. Doing so will tell your browser to start downloading a self-extracting 'ZIP' file which will contain the following:

- Arc Export files (.e00) of coverages
- Associated legend files (leg.)
- Metadata (.htm) file for the dataset
- NOTICE.RTF, an important notice about this data set that can be read by most word processing software, and an ascii text version of the same notice (NOTICE.TXT)

After downloading this self-extracting 'zip' file (which will have an 'exe' extension), simply execute (run) the file. (For example, you can double click it from Windows Explorer or File Manager). Doing this will automatically extract the files described above. You can then delete file types that you do not need, if any.

Associated Data Sets Depth to Bedrock Map: 'Geologic Map of Minnesota: Depth to Bedrock ', Minnesota Geological Survey Map S-14, 1982, by B.M. Olsen and J.H. Mossler, is the basis for this data layer. Map is available from the Minnesota Geological Survey Bookstore (612) 627-4782

Other maps and associated data sets at statewide scale include Bedrock Geology, Bedrock Hydrogeology, Quaternary Geology, and Quaternary Hydrogeology.

In EPPL raster format this data layer is also part of the LMIC MGC100 data set. Filename is DEPTHCRP.EPP.

Lineage Data source was the Minnesota Geological Survey's Map, 'Geologic Map of Minnesota: Depth to Bedrock' Minnesota Geological Survey, Map S-14, 1982, by Olsen and Mossler.

The file is a modification of the published map. The file was modified by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's Ground Water and Solid Waste Unit in 1989 to create closed polygons where none existed on the base map. This occurred primarily in the northwestern portion of the state, where few data points existed to draw contour lines, but where the depth to bedrock is generally high. This was done in order to enable the creation of a polygon digital coverage.

The data file was created by digitizing the linework from the 1:1,000,000-scale map into an arc layer. The arc coverage was modified by LMIC according to updates delineated by MPCA, to create polygons. At some point the original file was broken into two parts: Depth to Bedrock (where depth is greater than 0) and Outcrops (defined by MGS as 'areas of more or less continuous bedrock exposure'). In 1999 the file was converted from UTM Zone 15 NAD27 to UTM Zone 15 NAD83, using the Arc/Info 'PROJECT' command.

The arc coverage was also converted to a state 40-acre grid EPPL file based on the data field, 'Depth to Bedrock,' using the arc command 'GRIDPOLY'. The EPPL file remains as a single file, DEPTHCRP.EPP.
