Section 1 Overview
Originator Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Minnesota Geospatial Information Office
Title Hillshade, LiDAR-derived, Minnesota
Abstract The hillshade is a black-and-white image showing elevation changes in the landscape. It is created from a digital elevation model as if the elevation surface were illuminated by a hypothetical light source shining from the northwest.
Purpose Hillshades make it easier to visualize changes in elevation over a landscape. They can be used on their own or as a backdrop layer for other geographic data.
Time Period of Content Date
Currentness Reference Hillshades were generated from a number of LiDAR datasets collected at different times. See the source metadata listed on the Minnesota LiDAR information webpage: www.mngeo.state.mn.us/chouse/elevation/lidar.html

Section 2 Data Quality
Attribute Accuracy Several areas in Kanabec County have known highly visible major errors. The vendor who provided the original data has been notified of the problem.
Logical Consistency
Completeness Complete except for large lakes for which no LiDAR data was collected.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Variable. See the source metadata listed on the Minnesota LiDAR information webpage: www.mngeo.state.mn.us/chouse/elevation/lidar.html
Vertical Positional Accuracy Variable. See the source metadata listed on the Minnesota LiDAR information webpage: www.mngeo.state.mn.us/chouse/elevation/lidar.html
Lineage Processing for about half the counties was done by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the remaining counties were processed by the Minnesota Geospatial Information Office.

Hillshades were created from 1-meter source DEMs using the ArcGIS 10 Hillshade command. Default options were used: Altitude 45, Azimuth 315.

At MnGeo, the hillshades were exported from ArcGIS as grayscale images and were then imported into the Geospatial Image Service, a WMS service.
