Metadata Summary

Originator U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency, Aerial Photography Field Office
Abstract This data set contains imagery from the National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) and is comprised of scanned photographs that were acquired on color positive film. NAIP acquires digital ortho imagery during the agricultural growing seasons in the continental U.S.. A primary goal of the NAIP program is to enable availability of ortho imagery within one year of acquisition.

The source files are 1 meter ground sample distance (GSD) ortho imagery rectified to a horizontal accuracy of within +/- 3 meters of reference digital ortho quarter quads (DOQQ's) from the National Digital Ortho Program (NDOP). The tiling format of NAIP imagery is based on a 3.75' x 3.75' quarter quadrangle with a 300 meter buffer on all four sides. NAIP imagery may contain as much as 10% cloud cover per tile.

This file was generated by compressing NAIP quarter quadrangle tiles that cover a county. MrSID compression, with mosaic option, was used.

(Note: The Land Management Information Center has created this metadata record to describe the entire NAIP2003-04 dataset, using information from Farm Service Agency metadata provided in 2003 and 2004. Each county file is accompanied by the original FSA metadata for that county.)

Time Period of Content Date 2003
Currentness Reference Summer 2003. If an area of a county could not be flown in 2003, it has been filled with Summer 2004 imagery. See the accompanying quarter-quad boundary shapefile to find out the date that the source imagery was acquired.
Access Constraints None
Use Constraints The Aerial Photography Field Office asks to be credited in derived products.

For areas filled with 2004 imagery: Users should be aware that this is an interim release. The interim compressed county mosaic may contain defects and have horizontal accuracy less than the specified tolerances. Defective imagery may be replaced within one year of image acquisition date.

LMIC's Redistribution Conditions: If you obtain data from LMIC, it is understood that you and/or your organization have the right to use them for any internal purpose. If you modify them, you should document those changes in a metadata record that should accompany all redistributed data. If you transmit or provide these data in any form to another user, the data MUST be accompanied by a copy of LMIC's disclaimer NOTICE.TXT and all documentation provided with the original data set including the full metadata record.

Purpose NAIP imagery serves as a base for Farm Service Center GIS applications and is used to administer USDA commodity support programs and conservation planning. The MrSID mosaics were compiled to provide a data format that is highly compressed (20:1) with minimal data loss.

For areas filled with 2004 imagery: NAIP imagery may be distributed on an interim basis to meet USDA program requirements. The interim product is a compressed county mosaic. Users should be aware that the interim compressed county mosaic may contain defects and have horizontal accuracy less than the specified tolerances. Defective imagery may be replaced within one year of image acquisition date.

Associated Data Sets A shapefile, with its associated metadata, is included with this dataset. It shows polygons delineating the boundary between DOQQ imagery used in the creation of the MrSID county NAIP file and attributes such as the source date of the imagery.

For information on other air photos available for Minnesota, including other years of NAIP imagery, see http://www.lmic.state.mn.us/chouse/airphoto/index.html

Attribute Accuracy Color and tonal differences between the individual scanned images that were apparent in the interim version of the NAIP2003 data set have been largely corrected. Details about the procedure used are not available.

Areas that were filled in with 2004 imagery have a different color balance and generally appear more yellow-green than the 2003 imagery.

NAIP imagery may contain as much as 10% cloud cover per tile.
Logical Consistency N/A
Completeness Some parts of the state, primarily areas in Lake and Cook Counties, could not be photographed in 2003 due to poor weather conditions. Nearly all of these areas have been filled with 2004 imagery.
