Metadata Summary

Originator U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency, Aerial Photography Field Office
Abstract This INTERIM data set contains photographic information obtained for the National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) and is comprised of scanned photographs that were acquired on color positive film. Acquisition was leaf-on with mature crops prior to harvest. Images are 2-meter resolution and have been georectified (see Lineage and Horizontal Positional Accuracy for information on how georectification differs from orthorectification). NAIP imagery is quarter-quadrangle centered to provide consistent and repeatable coverage. The quarter-quad photos have been mosaicked into MrSID format county files.

The interim product has been created to provide timely information for the Farm Service Agency's compliance program. FSA is distributing the interim product ONLY with the understanding that the images have not yet undergone FSA's comprehensive quality assurance inspection process that may require corrections and possible replacement of the imagery.

(Note that FSA provides one metadata record per MrSID county file; the Land Management Information Center created this metadata record to describe the whole data set. For more information, also see FSA's NAIP website: http://www.apfo.usda.gov/naip.html )
Browse Graphic none available
Time Period of Content Date 2004
Currentness Reference Summer 2004. The dates of each photo are contained in an accompanying polygon file that shows the outline of each photo used to make the MrSID county file (the IDAT attribute).
Access Constraints None
Use Constraints Users should be aware that the interim compressed county mosaic may contain defects and have horizontal accuracy less than the specified tolerances. Defective imagery may be replaced within one year of image acquisition date.

Distributor Organization Aerial Photography Field Office (APFO)
Ordering Instructions 1. Selected MrSID interim county mosaics

APFO provided the following interim county mosaics to the Land Management Information Center since these counties contain areas that were not flown in 2003 (for a map showing the missing areas from 2003, see: http://www.lmic.state.mn.us/chouse/naip03flown_map.html ):

Aitkin, Brown, Carlton, Clay, Cook, Cottonwood, Itasca, Jackson, Kanabec, Lake, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Redwood, Renville, St. Louis and Watonwan

These counties are available for free download from LMIC's website (click below under Online Linkage). This link will take you to a webpage that explains more about the MrSID file format and contains direct links to download each county file.

2. Remaining Minnesota MrSID county mosaics

LMIC does not have these files. They are available on CD-ROM for $50 per county from the Aerial Photography Field Office. See: http://www.apfo.usda.gov/NAIP04%20Compressed%20County%20Mosaics%20Delivered.htm for a map of which counties are currently available.

For help with using the MrSID file format see: http://www.lmic.state.mn.us/chouse/mrsid_help.html

Purpose NAIP imagery serves as a base for Farm Service Center GIS applications and is used to administer USDA commodity support programs and conservation planning. The MrSID mosaics were compiled to provide a data format that is highly compressed with minimal data loss. A primary goal of the NAIP program is to enable availability of interim imagery within one month of acquisition.

NAIP imagery may be distributed on an INTERIM basis to meet USDA program requirements. The interim product is a compressed county mosaic. Users should be aware that the interim compressed county mosaic may contain defects and have horizontal accuracy less than the specified tolerances. Defective imagery may be replaced within one year of image acquisition date.

Attribute Accuracy
Logical Consistency N/A
Completeness NAIP imagery may contain as much as 10% cloud cover per tile. No further completeness report is available for the interim product.

See http://www.apfo.usda.gov/NAIP04%20Coverage.htm for a map of areas flown in 2004. Note that the interim product may not contain all of these areas flown, particularly in the Arrowhead region of NE Minnesota. The final product should contain all of the areas flown.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy FSA Digital Orthophoto Specs: For 2-meter NAIP products, the specifications are that the photos should be rectified to within 10 meters of reference DOQQs (reference DOQQs are mosaics of the 1991-92 orthophotos from the U.S. Geological Survey, described at http://www.lmic.state.mn.us/bmap90/doq/doq.htm ).

Note that 'georectification' is not the same as 'orthorectification' (see Lineage for a description of the differences). Since georectification does not use a digital elevation model to remove distortions caused by variations in topography, the differences between georectification and orthorectification processes will likely be more apparent in hilly areas than in flat areas.

Users should be aware that the interim compressed county mosaic may contain defects and have horizontal accuracy less than the specified tolerances. Defective imagery may be replaced within one year of image acquisition date.
Vertical Positional Accuracy N/A
Lineage The photos were flown by Aerial Services, Inc. See http://www.apfo.usda.gov/NAIP04%20Contractors.htm for area flown by this subcontractor.

Georectification process: Users of orthophotos (DOQs), particularly the Minnesota NAIP2003 photos, should be aware that 'georectification' is not the same as 'orthorectification'. Both processes use 1991-92 digital orthophotos from the U.S. Geological Survey for horizontal positional control, however:

- Orthorectified photos use a more accurate GPS ('Airborne GPS' and 'Inertial Management Unit') for control points while flying. IMU is based on a missile guidance system for more exact positioning.

- Orthorectified photos use 30-meter digital elevation models (DEMs) from the USGS to correct for distortions caused by topography. Georectified photos do not undergo this step.

The tiling format of NAIP imagery is based on a 3.75' x 3.75' quarter quadrangle with a 300 meter buffer on all four sides. NAIP quarter quads are formatted to the UTM coordinate system using NAD83. This file was generated by compressing NAIP quarter quadrangle tiles that cover a county. MrSID compression, with mosaic option, was used. Target values for the compression ratio are (50:1) and compression levels(9) are used.

No other lineage information is available for the interim product.

Note that 2004 photos covering areas that could not be flown in 2003 (see map at http://www.lmic.state.mn.us/chouse/naip03flown_map.html ) will be processed to 1-meter resolution, orthophoto specifications. As information becomes available about this product, it will be posted at:
