| Originator | Land Management Information Center, Minnesota Planning, and Minnesota Geological Survey |
| Abstract | This layer describes the general distribution of surficial sediments in Minnesota, as delineated and classified by the Minnesota Geological Survey. It is a digital version of the Minnesota Geological Survey State Map Series Map S-1 (Geologic Map of Minnesota: Quaternary Geology), 1982, by H.C. Hobbs and J.E. Goebel. (1:500,000). The digital file was created by scanning the 1:500,000-scale paper map and then converting the scanned image into an Arc/INFO polygon coverage. The Arc coverage was also converted to an EPPL 40-acre grid cell file, and then later updated for incorporation into the EPPL MGC100 data set. |

| Ordering Instructions | This data set is distributed on the internet by clicking below after Online Linkage. Doing so will tell your browser to start downloading a self-extracting 'ZIP' file which will contain the following: - Arc Export file of coverage (.e00) - Associated code file (.txt format) - Metadata (.htm) file for the dataset - NOTICE.RTF, an important notice about this data set that can be read by most word processing software, and an ascii text version of the same notice (NOTICE.TXT) After downloading this self-extracting 'zip' file (which will have an 'exe' extension), simply execute (run) the file. (For example, you can double click it from Windows Explorer or File Manager). Doing this will automatically extract the files described above. |
| Online Linkage | Click here to download data. (See Ordering Instructions above for details.) By clicking here, you agree to the notice in "Distribution Liability" in Section 6 of this metadata. |

| Associated Data Sets | Map: 'Geologic Map of Minnesota: Surficial Geology', Minnesota Geological Survey Map S-1, 1982, J.C. Hobbs and J.E. Goebel, is the basis for this data layer. Map is available from the Minnesota Geological Survey Bookstore (612) 627-4782. Other maps and associated data sets at statewide scale include Bedrock Geology, Bedrock Hydrogeology, and Quaternary (Surficial) Hydrogeology. In EPPL raster format this data layer is also part of the LMIC MGC100 data set (filename '4quatgeo.epp'). |

| Lineage | The file was created by scanning the 1:500,000-scale paper map, and converting the scanned image to an Arc/INFO polygon coverage. The file was later converted from single precision, NAD27, shifted, to double precision, NAD83 unshifted, using the Arc 'PROJECT' command. Lineage of EPPL version: Arc Scanned version (NAD27) was converted into a state 40-acre EPPL file; the file then georeferenced, projected to NAD83, and converted to MGC100 format. |
