Title Regional Hydrogeologic Assessment (Part B) - Traverse-Grant Area, West-Central Minnesota
Abstract ArcGIS shapefiles depicting a variety of characteristics of the ground water system of the Traverse-Grant, Minnesota Regional Hydrogeologic Assessment study area.
Purpose Geographic information systems (GIS) layers were created to cartographically depict and spatially analyze data used in the production of the Traverse-Grant Regional Hydrogeologic Assessment, Part B.

This report is the sixth in a series of Regional Hydrogeologic Assessments (RHA) completed as a joint effort by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Division of Waters and the Minnesota Geological Survey. This report describes the geology and hydrogeology of all or part of six counties in western Minnesota for the purpose of creating a regional inventory of aquifers and aquifer conditions. While similar in geographic scope to previous RHAs this report contains a more extensive treatment of the regional buried aquifer characteristics such as thickness and depth (Plate 4); hydrogeology as illustrated by cross sections (Plate 5); ground water flow directions, hydrochemistry, and pollution sensitivity (Plate 6). These features for most of the region make it similar to, but less detailed than, the companion county geologic atlas series. However, county geologic atlases (scale 1:100,000) have been published for Pope County, the southeastern county of the region (Part A, 2003 and Part B, 2006). This RHA is designed for units of government and citizens to use in planning for land use, water supply, and pollution prevention.

Lineage Review of available data: Investigations begin with a review of existing information, such as earlier geologic maps, soil maps, hydrologic reports, and information provided by well drillers. Drillers send water well logs to the Minnesota Geological Survey, where they are reviewed, interpreted, and entered into the County Well Index (CWI), an interactive data base of water-well information.

Collection of data from the field: Field studies are conducted to measure static water level elevations and chemistry of selected wells. These studies, combined with pre-existing data, are used to create models of water-table hydrogeology (elevation, potentiometric surface, potential yield, flow direction), and sensitivity of the near-surface ground water system to pollution.

Creation of GIS layers: Using a variety of techniques, data is converted into Arc/INFO coverages or ARCVIEW shapefiles for cartographic display and spatial analysis. Metadata for individual layers contain more detailed lineage information.
