| Abstract | This Superior National Forest data set is an Arc/Info polygon coverage and associated databases for National Forest Lands within the boundary of the Superior National Forest. This data set graphically displays and describes the existing vegetation which exhibits enough homogeneity to make it distinguishable from the surrounding areas. Stands are both forested and non-forested. The data were developed for project analysis and will also be used for forest planning. The data were mapped at 1:15,840 using resource photography on district compartment maps. The maps then were copied and scanned by a contractor who used orthophotography and cartographic feature files to create a vector coverage using LT4X software. Polygons were labeled with a code representing a concatenation of district, compartment and stand. District personnel then joined the data with timber stand database data and are proceeding to get a 1 : 1 match between the spatial and tabular data. |

| Currentness Reference | Resource photography is of various dates from 1978 to 1992 and orthophotography is from 1991-1992 NAPP. |
| Access Constraints | The data set is available free of charge in Arc/Info export format on a requester provided 8mm tape. Any processing or conversion to another format or media would require a charge for that service. Small datasets may be available via FTP in the future. |
| Use Constraints | The datasets are in a continual state of change and in effect are never current. | Attribute Accuracy | All stand attributes were interpreted from a combination of aerial photography and field inventory. Prior to the late 1970's approximately 10% of all stands were visited and examined each year as part of an inventory and update program. Since that time, the inventory program has evolved to a program where stands are visited and examined on an as needed basis. Accuracy varies from stand to stand, but it is felt that the average data is reasonably accurate on a forest-wide basis. | |||
| Logical Consistency | The data set is expected to be topologically 'clean' by September 1997. | |||
| Completeness | Vegetative stands have been mapped for all National Forest ownership in the Superior National Forest, but due to some large land exchanges, not all current ownership has been mapped. This should be completed within a year. | |||

| Lineage | DATA SOURCES: 1:15,840 Compartment/Stand Maps 1:24,000 Orthophotography 1991 - 1992 1:24,000 Cartographic Feature Files 1:15,840 Resource Photography PROCESSING STEPS FOR THE STANDS LAYER: The compartment/stands maps were developed over the years from various resource photography and field inventory. These maps were photocopied and sent to INFOTEC DEVELOPMENT, INC. in Portland, OR where they were scanned. The orthophoto quadrangles were also scanned and converted to TIFF images. The stands were then overlaid on the tiff files and corrected to fit any obvious on the ground feature such as a cleared area. The stands were then overlaid on the cartographic feature files and made to fit obvious features such as lake shores, roads, streams etc. Where there were questions, contact was made between the district personnel and Infotec personnel. The remaining stand lines were 'rubber sheeted' to best fit the other compartment and stand lines. Stand polygons were then labeled with district, compartment and stand numbers, except for the non-forest ownership polygons which were given a differentiating number such as 1000, 100, etc. The files were then converted to MOSS files and sent to the Superior National Forest. We converted the files to Arc/Info coverages either using PC Arc/Info or workstation Arc/Info. Most subsequent processing and tabular data matching was done using PC Arc/Info. Coverages were reviewed and edited by district personnel. The coverages were then converted to workstation Arc/Info and became part of our 'core' data. |
