From links in the table below, download county mosaics of NAIP 2003 (National Agricultural Imagery Program) aerial photography in MrSID format. The mosaics were created for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency compliance program. Note: some parts of the state, primarily areas in Lake and Cook counties, could not be photographed in 2003 due to poor weather conditions or other factors -- nearly all of these areas were filled in 2004. See a list or map of the missing areas.

Final product

All of the MrSID county files are now the final version. The final version corrects most of the color and tonal differences between the individual scanned images that were apparent in the interim version.

Download county mosaics

Each link points to a zip file that covers one county.

• 2003 files: The naming convention for the download file is:  "naip03_county name.zip" (for example, Todd County is "naip03_todd.zip").
• 2003-04 files: The naming convention for the download file is:  "naip03-04_county name.zip" (for example, Carlton County is "naip03-04_carlton.zip").

Unzip the download file to extract the following files:

• Data files: the image in MrSID format (.sid extension), its accompanying header file (.sdw extension) and a processing file created by the MrSID software.
  Naming convention:
  • For 2003, each file is named "ortho_e1-1_mncounty code",
    where "county code" is the last three digits of the FIPS county number.
    For example, the files covering Washington County are:
    • "ortho_e1-1_mn163.sid" -- the image file;
    • "ortho_e1-1_mn163.sdw" -- the header file;
    • "ortho_e1-1_mn163.txt" -- the processing file;
    • "ortho_e1-1_mn163.aux" -- the auxiliary file that holds projection information.
      Note:  you can also get the .aux files for all counties by downloading the naip2003_aux.exe file (a self-extracting zip file).
  • For 2003-04, the naming convention is usually "naip_1-1_1n_mncounty code_2003_2". The MrSID file is also accompanied by a shapefile of polygons showing the outlines of the quarter-quad files used to create the MrSID mosaic.
     
• Metadata: documentation for the data set:
  • naip03.html or naip03-04.html: These records, created by LMIC from information supplied by FSA, apply to the entire NAIP 2003 or 2003-04 datasets. In addition to the HTML format, two other formats (.lgr and .xml) are provided for users who may need to edit the documentation (see the readmeta.txt file included with the download file for more explanation of these formats).
  • FSA metadata, one file per county. For 2003, these files have an .fgdc.txt extension and contain the dates that each original quarter-quadrangle photo was flown. For 2004, the file extension is .met and the dates are in the accompanying shapefile.
    Note:  you can also get the metadata files for all 2003 counties by downloading the naip03_fsameta.exe file (a self-extracting zip file).
