Steve chairs MnGeo's Emergency Preparedness Committee. He retired from the
Navy in 2006 after 30 years of active/reserve service in the U.S. Marine Corps
and Navy. During his last five years in the Navy, he was a member of the
Department of Defense (DoD) Emergency Preparedness Liaison Team to Minnesota,
and helped develop several national-level disaster response programs for DoD. He
is currently employed as a 747-400 pilot with Delta Airlines.
Steve holds a B.S. Honors degree in geography from the University of Wisconsin,
and has completed a variety of post-graduate military schools.
During Hurricane Katrina, Steve worked on the Pentagon staff that coordinated
and directed DoD assistance along the Gulf Coast. He subsequently participated
in the DoD/Department of Homeland Security-sponsored effort to create an
emergency management Common Operating Picture that can be used by all levels of
responders and decision makers. He is an ardent believer that Geographic
Information Systems are central to effective disaster response.
