Metadata Summary

Originator Land Management Information Center, Minnesota Planning, and Minnesota Geological Survey
Abstract These layers describe the geologic classification of the hydrogeologic, or water-bearing, units for the Quaternary (surficial, unconsolidated) deposits in Minnesota as delineated and classified by the Minnesota Geological Survey. They represent an automated version of the Minnesota Geological Survey State Map Series Map S-3 (Hydrogeologic Map of Minnesota: Quaternary Hydrogeology), 1979, by Roman Kanivetsky (1:500,000). The Quaternary Hydrogeology file was created by digitizing the the 1:500,000-scale paper map. The 'Quaternary Hydrogeology - Materials' and 'Quaternary Hydrogeology - Yield' layers were then created based on attributes assigned to the file. The Arc coverages were also converted into EPPL 40-acre grid cell files.

Associated Data Sets Map: 'Hydrogeologic Map of Minnesota: QuaternaryHydrogeology', Minnesota Geological Survey Map S-3, 1979, by Roman Kanivetsky, is the basis for this data layer. Map is available from the Minnesota Geological Survey Bookstore (612) 627-4782.

Other maps and associated data sets at statewide scale include Bedrock Geology, Bedrock Hydrogeology, and Quaternary Geology.

In EPPL Grid format these data layers are also part of the LMIC MGC100 data set on CD. These include the main file for Quaternary Hydrogeology HYDQGEO.EPP, and derived files HYDQMAT.EPP, HYDQYIEL.EPP, and HYDQBOW.EPP. File descriptions and legends for the EPPL files are otherwise as described in the Entity and Attribute section.

Lineage The Quaternary Hydrogeology Map was digitized by LMIC into an Arc/INFO polygon coverage (HYDQGEO) from the 1:500,000-scale paper map. File was converted from the original Lambert Conformal projection of the base map to UTM, Zone 15 extended, NAD27. Staff manually added attributes for materials and yield which were represented on the paper map. These attributes were then used with the Arc/Info 'DISSOLVE' command to create the Materials (HYDQMAT) and the Yield (HYDQYIEL) layers. The files were later converted from single precision, NAD27, shifted, to double precision, NAD83 unshifted, using the Arc 'PROJECT' command.

The EPPL files (HYDQGEO.EPP, HYDQMAT.EPP, and HYDQYIEL.EPP) were created from the Arc Covers using the 'POLYGRID' command with a 40-acre cell size. NOTE that there is also a 'Buried Outwash' file (HYDQBOW.EPP) on the EPPL data set. This attribute was originally digitized off the basemap and coded with an attribute. This file could be re-created from the EPPL file, if needed, or redigitized. The Buried Outwash file consists of 12-15 polygons spread across the state, with yield rating values (in gallons per minute) as an attribute.

Entity and Attribute Overview Three data layers are part of this Arc/Info data set:

HYDQGEO - Quaternary Hydrogeology - geology layer (main layer)
HYDQMAT - Quaternary Hydrogeology - Materials
HYDQYIEL - Wuaternary Hydrogeology - Yield

Attributes on HYDQGEO can be used to create the other two derived layers.
Entity and Attribute Detailed Citation The Quaternary Hydrogeology polygon coverage has the following data structure:

DATAFILE NAME: HYDQGEO.PAT
8 ITEMS: STARTING IN POSITION 1
COL ITEM NAME WDTH OPUT TYP N.DEC ALTERNATE NAME
1 AREA 8 18 F 5
9 PERIMETER 8 18 F 5
17 HYDQGEO# 4 5 B -
21 HYDQGEO-ID 4 5 B -
25 HYDQ_CODE 3 3 I -
28 HYDQMAT_KEY 80 80 C -
108 HYDQYLD_KEY 80 80 C -
188 HYDQGEO_KEY 80 80 C -
** REDEFINED ITEMS **
25 HYDQMAT_CODE 1 1 C -
26 HYDQYLD_CODE 1 1 C -
27 HYDQGEO_CODE 1 1 C -

HYDQ_CODE is a 3-integer code, xyz, where:

x indicates the Aquifer Materials Code: (HYDQMAT_CODE)

0 Non-aquifer
1 Gravel
2 Sand
3 Sand & Gravel
4 Sand, Silt, and Gravel
5 Stratified sand, silt, clay, & gravel
6 Sand (Lake Deposits)

y indicates the Yield Code: (HYDQYLD_CODE)

Yield (Sustained rating of aquifer, in gallons per minute)
0 Less than 1 gallon per minute(Non-Aquifer)
2 1-5 gallons per minute
3 5-25 gallons per minute
4 25-100 gallons per minute
5 100-500 gallons per minute
6 more than 500 gallons per minute

z indicates the Hydrogeologic Classification: (HYDQGEO_CODE)

1 Outwash
2 Alluvium
3 Lake Deposits
4 Non-aquifer

The corresponding KEY fields in the data file contain the associated text. Essentially this file can be used to recreate the two files described below.

The Quaternary Hydrogeology - Materials polygon coverage contains the following attributes:

COL ITEM NAME WDTH OPUT TYP N.DEC ALTERNATE NAME
1 AREA 8 18 F 5
9 PERIMETER 8 18 F 5
17 HYDQMAT# 4 5 B -
21 HYDQMAT-ID 4 5 B -
25 HYDQMAT_CODE 2 2 I -
27 HYDQMAT_KEY 80 80 C -

The Quaternary Hydrogeology - Yield polygon coverage contains the following data fields:

COL ITEM NAME WDTH OPUT TYP N.DEC ALTERNATE NAME
1 AREA 8 18 F 5
9 PERIMETER 8 18 F 5
17 HYDYIEL# 4 5 B -
21 HYDQYIEL-ID 4 5 B -
25 HYDQYLD_CODE 2 2 I -
27 HYDQYLD_KEY 80 80 C -

Data attributes for these files are as already described above.

Note that, for the Materials and Yield coverages, the Non-Aquifer portions of the state are classified as '0' and therefore are part of the state's 'outer polygon' in arc/info. Thus there is no state boundary contained on these two files.
