Interface Element Description: Tab 2

Element: Zone Identifier for Coordinate System
Type: text

Definition

This field applies to several different metadata elements depending on the horizontal coordinate system specified in the projection field.

  • UTM projection: This field holds the UTM Zone for MGMG 1.2 element utmzone.
  • State Plane projection: This field holds the SPCS Zone identifier for MGMG 1.2 element spcszone.
  • County Coordinate projection: This field holds the County Coordinate Zone Identifer for the MGMG 1.2 element mgmg4coz.
  • Guidance

The zone field applies to State Plane Coordinate System, UTM projection and Minnesota County Coordinate System options. It is used to determine output information for the coordinate system field information. Select the appropriate zone for the spatial reference system used for your data set.

For the Minnesota County Coordinate System, the zone identifier is a number from 1 to 67. Their source is The Minnesota County Coordinate System, A User's Handbook by Ken Whitehorn, Itasca County Surveyor, published by Precision Measuring Systems, 1998. Here's a map showing Minnesota's UTM zones, State Plane Zones and county coordinate zones.

Also, a detailed description of Minnesota map projections and parameters from the Minnesota DOT.

Edit database table HorizCoordSys_cluster to add or modify available values for this element. After editing elements, select Tools > Refresh from database to see the new or modified values.

  • 15E  (represents zone 15 extended to cover the entire state of Minnesota)
  • 16
  • For SPCS:

Use the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) four-digit numeric code. In Minnesota:
  • North = 2201
  • Central = 2202
